Put up or...

Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has told opposition members in the Parliment to put up or shut up:

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has picked up the gauntlet thrown down by senators who threatened to launch a general debate in parliament if the government did not recall Thai soldiers from Iraq.

Mr Thaksin challenged the senators to proceed with the general debate motion.

Fifty-eight senators and non-governmental organisation activists signed a petition demanding the immediate withdrawal of the soldiers, citing increasingly volatile security in Iraq.

Mr Thaksin said situation assessments confirmed the soldiers were safe. They were not the target of hostility because they carried out humanitarian duties.

The Prime Minister went on to tell the Members of Parliment:

"Wouldn't you feel ashamed ordering soldiers to run away from a battle?'' he said, likening it to handing out a women's sarong for the troops to wear.

The 443 Thai soldiers in Iraq operate a clinic where they see up to 100 people a day.
