J Cofer Black

State Department Coordinator for counter-terrorism J Cofer Black visited India a few days ago. What he did there is unclear:

India today confirmed that State Department Coordinator for counter-terrorism J Cofer Black visited this country on March 1-2 but described as "fanciful" reports in the media that the US super spy had briefed Indian officials on Pakistani military's involvement in the nuclear technology spy scandal, among other things.

"Such press reports do make headlines but do not further the cause of accuracy," an External Affairs Ministry spokesman told reporters here.

He was commenting on a report in an English daily that Black had told the Indian officials that Washington had no doubt about the involvement of the military establishment in Islamabad in the nuclear technology leak operations and also underlined the critical importance of the Pervez Musharraf regime in the US-led war against terrorism.

The spokesman said Blake held delegation level talks with Ms Meera Shankar, who is in-charge of counter-terrorism in the External Affairs Ministry.

He also had meetings with law enforcing agencies and officials in the Home Ministry.

The spokesman said the two sides discussed terrorism in general and the situation in Afghanistan.

The meetings were part of the regular interaction between India and the US, he added.
