Robert Mugabe

The US has imposed new sanctions on Zimbabwe and President Robert Mugabe:

The US government has imposed a new series of sanctions on Zimbabwe because of what Washington says is the deteriorating situation there.

The state department said President Robert Mugabe seemed determined to hold on to power at any cost.

Amongst other things, the new sanctions target government-owned companies and Information Minister Jonathan Moyo.

The US and Europe already have a number of sanctions in place against the Zimbabwean government.

The state department said the worsening situation in Zimbabwe over the last month had prompted it to impose the new sanctions.

It highlighted the dispersal of peaceful demonstrations, the closure of independent newspapers and new powers taken by the Zimbabwean government to arrest and detain suspects without charge.

The new sanctions also hit a government-owned arms manufacturer and a company owned by the ruling Zanu-PF party.
