Emergency shut down

A nuclear power plant has been shut down "in an emergency procedure due to a technical problem."

A reactor at a nuclear power plant near the northern Russian city of Saint Petersburg was automatically shut down in an emergency procedure due to a technical problem, officials said Monday.

The shutdown occurred Sunday after power in the reactor dropped suddenly, the local branch of the ministry for emergency situations said in a statement, adding that no increases in radiation levels were detected around the facility.

An investigation into the cause of the reactor shutdown was under way, the statement said.
